2023 NFPA 70 Code Changes to Electrical Exam Questions

The National Electrical Code (NEC) is a set of standards that regulates the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment in the United States. The NEC is updated every three years to reflect the latest advancements and best practices in the electrical industry. Revision of Article 250: Grounding and Bonding.

This article has been reorganized and simplified to improve clarity and usability. Some of the major revisions include:
A definition of “bonding jumper” that distinguishes it from “grounding jumper” as well as a new section on bonding methods for gas piping systems and other metallic piping systems that are likely to become energized.

Revision of Article 310: Conductors for General Wiring.

This article has been updated to include new conductor types and ampacity tables. For example, a new conductor type, XHHW-3 has been added which is a thermoset-insulated, moisture- and heat-resistant conductor with a maximum operating temperature of 90°C in wet or dry locations. Table 310.16, which replaces the previous Tables 310.15(B)(16) through (B)(21). This new table provides ampacities for copper and aluminum conductors in various temperature ratings, insulation types, and installation methods.

Revision of Article 406: Receptacles, Cord Connectors, and Attachment Plugs (Caps).

This article has been revised to address new technologies and safety issues related to receptacles and plugs. For example, a new requirement for tamper-resistant receptacles (TRRs) in all dwelling units, guest rooms, guest suites, and childcare facilities has been added. Also, a new requirement for weather-resistant receptacles (WRRs) in all outdoor locations has been added regardless of whether they are protected by a weatherproof cover or not.
